Die 120 Tage von Bottrop & Egomania – Insel ohne Hoffnung

Failing was his principle, pushing the boundaries his methodological approach. Christoph Schlingensief kept pushing cinema and film art to their limit – and beyond. The Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz will present two of his most iconic films and host a discussion with Kerstin Grassmann, Sophie Rois and Martin Wuttke about working with Schlingenseif, about improvisation and excess, about chaos and control.
In Die 120 Tage von Bottrop, the survivors of the Fassbinder family reunite at Berlin’s massive construction site at Potsdamer Platz to shoot the very last New German Cinema feature film – in a remake version of Pasolini’s The 120 Days of Sodom. Schlingensief’s homage is also the death blow to a specific film era: a sarcastic trip through the German film landscape set to a soundtrack by Helge Schneider.
Caspar David Friedrich meets Nosferatu: Egomania – Island Without Hope is a 1986 post-apocalyptic love drama set in the perpetual ice on a Hallig island in the North Sea. It’s a film about German history, the decline of a civilisation in the Nibelungen tradition, featuring the young Tilda Swinton as Brünhilde, and Udo Kier as the Devil’s aunt. Schlingensief described Egomania as “probably my most beautiful and romantic film. It’s only once in a lifetime that you can deceive yourself in this way.”
