If you want to have power, start by changing mindsets and cultural norms. Right-wing actors are aware of this truism, and it’s beginning to show in cultural policies too: drastic cuts to funding, parliamentary questions, calls for boycotts, hate mail and hate speech, doxing and coordinated media campaigns are all part of it. Concepts such as neutrality and artistic freedom are being strategically redefined to put pressure on institutions. It is a question of who controls how history and social coexistence are addressed and dealt with in the public discourse.

In a series of events, Mapping the Right takes the German state elections in autumn 2026 as a starting point to examine this shift. How did cultural policy become an instrument of fascistisation? Talking with cultural actors from regions where far-right narratives enjoy widespread support, we want to map out how institutions, associations and initiatives – right down to state structures – are being impacted. The ensuing archive will be made available to the public. How can we create networks and show solidarity with those whose work is already under threat by that which may be the norm in tomorrow’s world?
